The Prediction Model of Spiritual Well-being among the Elderly Persons
Cho Joon-Ah

Abstract
The aims of this study were twofold: to identify causal pathways between variables affecting spiritual well-being in elderly persons based on the Bio-Psycho Socio-Spiritual (BPSS) model established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1998 and to build a final integrated model to explain spiritual well-being in elderly persons. The participants of this study were 331 elderly men and women aged 65 years or older who were enrolled in elderly culture centers and senior welfare centers located in Seoul and Gangwon-do, South Korea. Data were collected for analysis using a survey. The influence of exogenous and endogenous variables on spiritual well-being in elderly persons was verified using structural equation modeling (SEM). After testing for the goodness-of-fit of the hypothetical model, a correction model considering its theoretical validity was proposed. Then, a final model an improvement over the hypothetical model was developed. The results of this study indicated that the variables directly affecting spiritual well-being in elderly persons included social support, anxiety regarding death, interpersonal relationships, and spiritual needs. However, spiritual needs among those variables were shown to have the greatest influence on spiritual well-being in elderly persons. Therefore, the results of this study will provide basic data for developing spiritual nursing intervention programs and practical guidelines for providing spiritual support to help elderly persons experience spiritual well-being and age successfully.
